Litchi was firstly grown more than 2000 years ago and
its main places of production are Conghua County and Zengcheng
County. It is very difficult to store fresh Litchi and
it is often made into cans to sell to other places.
＃Zengcheng Gua
Lu
It
is the most precious variety among Litchi, coming from
Zengcheng County. It is different from other Litchi. Its
shell is red with a green thread around it. That's the
origin of its name. The flesh of the fruit is pure white
and sweet. It has been grown since the 12th century and
now there is only one tree left, which is several hundred
years old, in Zengcheng Xi Park. Now the government is
trying to protect and develop this precious variety.
＃Nuo Mi Ci
It
is one of quality varieties of Litchi, grown in South
China. Its fruit is bigger than other varieties with small
cores. The flesh of fruit is very smooth and sweet. It
has been widely grown in Ming Dynasty in the region of
Guangzhou. Nuo Mi Ci from Huanpu Bi Village has a long
history of more than 500 years. It is mainly sold to local
people or Hong Kong.
＃Fei
Zi Xiao
It is one of quality varieties of Litchi,
grown in South China. When it is ripe, the shell of the
fruit is green but with some light rose. The outlook of
the fruit is excellent. It is grown in all places of production
of Litchi and has been competitive in the market.
＃Carambola
It is a kind of evergreen or half-evergreen
arbor with small white or purplish red flowers. It originally
came from Malaysia and has been widely grown in Guangzhou
for more than 1500 years. It is divided into two varieties:
one is sweet and the other is sour. It can be made into
dishes and also has medical values. It is mainly sold
to local people.
＃Pineapple
It came to Guangzhou at the end of the 19th
century. Its main places of production are Baiyun District
and Zengcheng County. Huandeng pineapple from Huangpu
District is the most famous. It can be made into cans
and wine and is mainly sold to local people.
＃Longan
It is a kind of evergreen arbor with small yellow
flowers. Its shell is in yellow or brown and the fruit
is just like a ball. The flesh of the fruit is white and
transparent, with a sweet flavor. It was originally grown
in China and now it has a long history of more than 2000
years. It is widely grown in the region of Guangzhou.
Shixia longan from Haizhu District is the most famous
variety. The fruits are sold to the local people or Hong
Kong and Macau.
＃Mango
It is a kind of tropical evergreen arbor, which is
more than 10 metres and less than 20 metres high. The
fruit in light green or light yellow looks like a ball
or a kidney. The flesh is sweet with much juice. Its pericarp
could be made into medicine and the bark and leaves could
be made into tincture. It originally came from India and
Malaysia and has been grown in China for over 1300 years.
Panyu City, Baiyun District, and Huangpu District are
the main places of production in Guangzhou Region. The
fruits are mainly sold to local people.
